What is Yoga?
Yoga is a mind-body practice designed to improve overall health, strength, flexibility, mental clarity and tranquility in people of all ages and fitness levels. Yoga is an ancient system of breathing practices (pranayama), physical exercises and postures (asanas) and meditation designed to integrate the practitioner's mind, body, and spirit, and facilitate optimal health. It originated in India over five thousand years ago and its tenets were written down by a scholar named Pantanjali in the second century B.C. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit word yuj meaning “union.” In the last 50 years, yoga has gained increasing popularity in the West and is regarded as an extraordinary form of exercise, physical therapy, and stress relief. Yoga practitioners worldwide have used this practice as a means to greater health and happiness. As of 2002, more than 6 million people in the United States were practicing some form of yoga, with 1.7 million claiming to practice it regularly.
